Why 291 packages fail to build · Arch Linux extra-staging · aarch64
C/C++ sources are incompatible with the current compiler (GCC 16 defaults to C23): implicit-int and implicit function declarations, conflicting / old-style prototypes, “too many arguments / expected 0” calls, incompatible callback pointers, keywords (bool, false) used as identifiers, const-discards, and similar strict-diagnostic pile-ups in older code.
Package assumes x86_64: x86-only compiler flags (-msse*, -m64, -mfpmath=sse, -march=nehalem…), x86-only headers (x86intrin.h, immintrin.h, sys/io.h), x86 intrinsics / inline assembly, prebuilt x86_64 binaries (Intel oneAPI, MKL intel64 libs, esbuild / workerd / bazel / Elm compiler), or upstreams with no aarch64 support file.
The package compiles, but its test suite fails in check(): unit / integration test assertions, flaky or network-dependent tests, SIGSEGV / SIGABRT in test binaries, deqp/ksh/doctest mismatches, and test environments that cannot run in the chroot.
Project declares an ancient cmake_minimum_required — support for CMake versions below 3.5 was removed, so CMake rejects the project before configuration starts. Fix: bump the required version in the PKGBUILD or upstream.
Upstream sources could not be fetched: DNS resolution failures, connection timeouts, HTTP 4xx/5xx responses, expired or invalid TLS certificates, aborted git clones, and a pacman mirror-sync failure. Retry-transients vs. dead upstream URLs are mixed.
pacman could not resolve or install the declared build dependencies in the aarch64 chroot: missing packages, unsatisfied versioned provides, or makedepends that themselves cannot be built for aarch64.
The bundled config.guess / config.sub is too old to recognize aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu, so configure dies with “cannot guess build type” even though the compiler is fine. Fix: refresh lib/config.guess from automake.
Language-specific toolchain failures: Rust compile errors and crate-version pins, Go compile / link errors with Arch LDFLAGS leaking into the Go linker, Node / npm build steps, Gradle, SBCL (Lisp), Ruby native extensions, and codegen helpers.
Downloaded tarballs / patch files did not pass the integrity check (“One or more files did not pass the validity check” / … FAILED). Either the PKGBUILD checksum is stale or the upstream tarball was re-uploaded.
A required build tool, header, or library is absent from the aarch64 build environment: aarch64-linux-gnu-ar, automake-1.16, wineg++, node-gyp, kernel headers (linux/scc.h), cuSPARSELt, Berkeley DB 1.85 compatibility, a meson subproject, or mk-configure settings for GCC 16.
Failure inside configure / autoreconf / CMake configuration: old autoconf 2.13 conftest programs rejected by GCC 16 (“C compiler cannot create executables”), autopoint refusing to overwrite locally modified gettext files, CMake targets expected from a mismatched dependency, and environment-dependent checks (localhost resolution).
Failure while linking: undefined references (e.g. __libc_csu_fini, removed from modern glibc), PIC / AArch64-relocation errors, LTO-plugin crashes, and non-C linkers (Go, add) rejecting Arch LDFLAGS.
Failures that do not fit cleanly above: an SBCL “bug in readtable iterators” crash while building nyxt, and a doxygen “Could not create output directory” failure in the opendbx documentation build.
